Nordic Nail Open 2024

DIVISIONS

Nail Master

Any competitor that has placed first, second or third in a recognized nail competition of any type. The competition fee is 1000 SEK for each competition. You pay max 4000 SEK thereafter the competitions are free.

  • Gel and Acrygel – 1st place: TROPHY – The competitor with a highest score in gel (both competitions are accounted for) also win the entry fee for NAILYMPIA in London 2024 and 2000 SEK towards expenditures. The same is for acrygel.
    The winner will get all entries to Master division in Nailympia and compete in both acrylic and gel.
  • Gel and Acrygel – 2-3 place: TROPHY.

 

Nail Starter
Students and professional nail technicians that have never participated in any type of nail competition – or students and professional nail technicians that have competed, but never won a recognized competition, but have placed up to 4th position. The competition fee is 1000 SEK for each competition. You pay max 4000 SEK thereafter the competitions are free.

  • Gel and Acrygel – 1 place: TROPHY. The competitor with a highest score in gel (both competitions are accounted for) also win the entry fee for NAILYMPIA in London 2024. The same is for acrygel.
    The winner will get all entries to Master division in Nailympia and compete in both acrylic and gel.
  • Gel and Acrygel – 2-3 place: TROPHY.

 

NORDIC CHAMPION Gel and NORDIC CHAMPION Acrygel

The competitor who gets the highest score in both the gel competition and the competitor who gets the highest score in both the acrygel competitions.

This category is for competitors with a citizenship from any of the Nordic countries; Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland.

 

WINNER OF WINNERS Classic

A thrilling bonus competition, Winner of Winners. Automatically all will participate in the contest whiteout any extra charges. The competitor who gets the highest score in the classical competitions – Gel competitions, Acrygel competitions and Gel polish – in total during these three days will win the big Glass trophy and can boast the title of Winner of Winners Classic 2024.

A thrilling bonus competition, Winner of Winners. Automatically all will participate in the contest whiteout any extra charges. The competitor who gets the highest score in the Nail Art competitions – Reality, Stiletto and Fantasy – in total during these three days will win the big Glass trophy and can boast the title of Winner of Winners 2023.

Maximum 20 contestants in each competition with all divisions included. Maximum 5 Teams in Team Trio.Each section of Nail Systems Open must be attended by at least 4 contestants or the categories will be added into the nearest category.

The registration is binding. If the competitor give notice no later than 6 weeks before the start of the competition, the full fee will be refunded. If the competitor give notice after 6 weeks before the start of the competition, 50% of the fee will be refunded. If the competitor give notice 3 weeks before the start of the competition, no part of the fee will be refunded. All costs are without VAT, which will be added – or send us your VAT number then it will not be added.

We will also do a short briefing of the criteria before each competition.

Mobile phones may not be used during the competition, both from the models or from the competitors. It can be used as a stopwatch, but must be in flight mode, or you can use it with earplugs for music. Models may not use their mobile phone during judging.

But you are welcome to take lots of pictures both before and after the competition and please use for your pictures:

COMPETITION CRITERIA

General criteria

  • The competition is open for all nail technicians and students.
  • Contestants and models must be at least 16 years of age.
  • The competition fee must be paid before the competition starts.
  • No work on the model hands is allowed in the competition area 10 minutes before the competition starts. The contestant may not touch the model’s hands during the review of rules that starts 10 minutes before the competition. If the contestant performs work during the review it will leads to 5 points deductions.
    • The model’s hands will be checked between but not controlled for eventual wounds. Visible wounds and cuts will give point deductions.
    • The models hand may be manicured but must be free of any artificial product.
    • The model may not carry any jewelry such as rings, watches or bracelets (except for Fantasy). Visible birthmarks and tattoos on hands or arms – these are NOT to be covered with adhesive tape of any kind.
    • Model is wearing short sleeves or alternatively drag up sleeves in preparation for the judging. (except for Fantasy)
  • Look carefully in the agenda for exact time for briefing and competition.
  • Contestants must provide all products needed for the competition, also extension cord, lighting, UV-lamp or LED lamp for gel contestants. One table and two chairs and one socket will be provided. In Sweden we have a European socket and 220V.
  • Contestants work stations will be checked before the competition starts. Please note that when the competition has started the contestants will not be able to retrieve any items from their bags. All bags must be placed at the specified location and handbags should be placed under the seats. Also, if anything falls to the floor, please tell the floor judge before it will be picked up.
  • All products must be in original packing. Handwritten labels are allowed on dispensers for remover, water, glitter and decorations. Unmarked jars will be taken away of by the floor judges and will be returned after the competition.
  • There may not be any other products on the work station than the ones used in the competition to create the model enhancements.
  • No white tips may be used (only natural or clear). Tips may not be pre-blended. All tips must be in a box with no less than 10 tips in each section of the box and with matching numbers.
  • Forms may not be precut or in any other way pre-modeled before the competition starts. It may only be 25 forms on the packing, on a roll or how they original are packed.
  • Resin may not be used in the competitions – Acrygel on form, Gel on form and Gelpolish. Resin may be used in all other competitions. Activator for resin is not allowed.
  • Drills ARE allowed. Except in Gelpolish and Team Trio.
  • Cuticle oil may be used, also hand lotion and creme. But there shall not be any residue – there will be deduction for product residue.
  • Water is allowed.
  • The nails or tips are NOT allowed to be decorated with any brand logos.
  • No smoking, eating or drinking is allowed during the competition or in the competition area. Soft drinks are acceptable.
  • Mobile phones are not allowed to be used – except as a watch. The phone must be on silent and without vibration signal and put in flight mode. It is not allowed to take pictures or use video.
  • Contestants may not start before the floor judge has said so, and when the competition time is finished the model must stand up from the work station immediately. If the contestants continue to work outside the competition time it will lead to 10 point deduction.
  • Contestants and models may not leave the competition area during the competition.
  • Nail Systems Open will be open to public as viewers – but they may not enter the competition area.
  • Please read all the criteria and get clarification on any you are not 100% certain of, as this is your responsibility.

 

After the competition

  • Models shall leave the contestant for the judging – they will be guided by the staff.
  • Models must not leave the judging area until judging is completed.
  • It is the model’s responsibility to see that they have been judged by all the judges. If a model is not seeing a judge the competitor will not been given any points in this area.
  • Models may not use their mobile phones during the judging.
  • Models may not touch their nails before the judging is finished and the hands should be visible at all times. If the model touches her/his hands during or uses the mobile phone during the judging, it will be given one warning and thereafter the model/competitor will be disqualified.
  • Contestants must immediately after the competition clean out their work station or set up for the next competition.
  • The judges will remain after the award ceremony for comments and help.

In the event of a tie, in any of the three top positions.

  • All the judges’ total point for the overall impression.
  • If it still is a tie, then it is the head judge points for overall impression and thereafter the head judge total points.

GEL AND ACRYGEL/POLYGEL

Competition time: Two times 75 minutes (1 hours 15 minutes)

The competition time is divided into two competitions each of 75 minutes.

 

Competition with TIPS – part 1

    • During 75 minutes all the nails on the model’s LEFT HAND is to be enhanced with TIPS and model’s thumb and little finger painted with red nail polish without shimmer. The competitor brigs their own nail polish. No base-or topcoat of any type may be used. The result of the polish must be completely opaque.
    • The other three nails shall be completely free from any type of nail polish.

 

Competition with FORMS – part 2

    • During 75 minutes all the nails on the model’s RIGHT HAND is to be enhanced with FORMS and model’s thumb and little finger painted with red nail polish without shimmer. The competitor brigs their own nail polish. No base-or topcoat of any type may be used. The result of the polish must be completely opaque.
    • The other three nails shall be completely free from any type of nail polish.
  • Smile line should be sculptured with a brush. A file may be used to refine the smile.
  • To create a sharp smileline, it is allowed to use Clear, Pink or Cover Pink.
  • If Cover Pink is used it is allowed to extend the nailbed. But if so – it should also be a crisp smile seen from the underside of the nail.
  • The polished nails do not need to have white under the polish.
  • The other three nails on each hand must be enhanced with French manicure.
  • Oil may be used, also hand lotions but it must not be any residue on the nails or hands – then points will be a 2 point deduction for product residue.
  • Competitors compete in both forms and tips. There will be about a 10-minute break between the competitions. Competitors shall remain at their stations. The model’s hands may not be touched.

 

CRITERIA

Length – 10 points

  • All nails should have the same length measured from the cuticle to the edge of the nail. The thumb nail may be somewhat longer and the little fingernail somewhat shorter.
  • The extension of the nail must not be more than 100% of the length of the nailbed. This length is measured from eponychium to the deepest part of the smile, and from the deepest part of the smile to the free edge.
  • If any cover product has been used this should be in proportion with the natural nail.

 

Free edge shape – 10 points

  • The chosen form must be square or round and must be with consistent in shape on all nails.

 

Apex – 10 points

  • Apex – seen from the side – consistent and same placement on all nails.
  • Apex must be consistent in height.

 

C-curve – 10 points

  • C-curve shall be with consistency in depth and the same on the left and right side. The depth must be a minimum of 40% of a circle.
  • C-curves highest point should be consistent in height and placement on all fingers and follow the whole length of the nail, all the way down to the eponychium. No bumps or uneven spots.

 

Side walls (also parallel sides) – 10 points

  • Side walls should be straight, seen from the top of the nail, and follow the nail bed. The side walls should be same on the left and right side. It can be slightly tapered, but still in a straight shape.
  • Side walls should be straight seen from the side of the nail.

 

Cuticle area and Thickness of the Free edge – 10 points

  • The product line should be invisible and the cuticles without damage. No flooding of the product or areas with product in the cuticle area.
  • The front of the nail – the thickness of the free edge – shall be thin and with an even upper and lower curve without any unevenness. May not be thicker than a credit card.

 

Smile line – 10 points

  • The smile line shall be clearly and sharp sculptured, without any shadows where the white meets the pink.
  • The smile should have consistency in shape on all nails.

 

White tip – 10 points

  • The white tip should be consistent on all nail in the density of the color and without bubbles. The white tip should be consistent in length, but if the total length of the nail is chosen with a somewhat longer thumb nail and somewhat shorter little fingernail, that should follow in the white edge.

 

Polish – 10 points

  • Density and clarity in the color of the polish. No scratches or dull areas.
  • The whole nail should be polished except under the nail, also the thickness of the free edge, if this is visible. Evenness at the cuticle area. There should be no sight of the artificial nail.

 

Surface on unpolished nails – 10 points

  • The whole surface should shine like glass and there must not be any scratches or marks. The whole nail should shine – all the way down to eponychium.
  • No red marks on the nailbed due to overfilling. The color of the product on the nailbed (clear or pink) should be clear and dense. Consistent without any bubbles.

 

Tip/Form fit and product residue – 10 points

  • The tip or form should be invisibly placed without marks or edges.
  • The natural nail must not be seen.
  • The nails and fingers should be free of dust and product residue (also oil and resin).
  • If cover pink has been used it should also be an even smile line seen from underneath the nail.

 

Over all impression – 20 points

  • Complexity of the workmanship, so as depth of smile, application of cover pink.
  • Harmony between hand and nails.
  • The judges’ impression.

GELPOLISH

Theme: Optional

Competition time: 60 minutes (1 hour)

A competition that is both classic and Nail Art. Some parts classic French Manicure and classic red but then you bring out all the joy and creativity. Both thumbs to be decorated and the imagination can flow freely. Flowers, Colors, Patterns, Fish, Hearts … exactly what you want. We are all curious about what will be created during this hour.

 

  • The model’s hand may be manicured but must be free of any artificial product.
  • A full set (2 hands) must be completed within the time of 60 minutes (1 hour).
  • Contestants should not be applying any enhancements to the nails. Contestants should only use gel polish, no other artificial product.
  • The fingers of one hand, except the thumb, should be polished with a red gelpolish without shimmer.
  • The fingers of the other hand, except the thumb, should be polished with gelpolish without any shimmer and with the technique French Manicure. Pink, Cover Pink or Clear may be used.
  • The thumbs on both hands should be decorated. For the decoration it may only be used with gel polish. No stickers, glitter or similar. Any kind of tool may be used. The theme for the decoration is your choice.
  • If the gel polish contains glitter in the original, this may be used. The gel polish must be in the original packaging. It must be clearly marked that it is a soak-off gelpolish. The topcoat can be non-soak-off if this is the original line of products.
  • The original packing must be in a bottle with a brush.
  • Oil may be used, also hand lotions but it must not be any residue on the nails or hands – then points will be a 2 point deduction for product residue.
  • The judges will also look at the manicure of the hands and nails. They should be well manicured and groomed.

 

CRITERIA

  • The white tip should be consistent on all nails in shape and the density of the color and without bubbles.
  • Evenness at the cuticle area, also the thickness of the free edge, if this is visible but no polish under the nail.

 

Professionalism – 10 points

  • No red marks due to overfilling or redness on the cuticle or hands.
  • The hands and cuticle should feel soft and have a healthy shine but without any excess products like oil or hand lotion.
  • The nails and fingers should be free of dust and product residue (also oil).
  • The whole surface must be even in surface and without any scratches or marks. EXCEPT for planned level difference due to nail art.

 

Decoration – 10 points

  • Creativity in the making and design of the decoration.
  • Originality – is the design new and innovative.
  • Degree of difficulty.

 

Composition of the decoration– 10 points

  • The composition should be in harmony and match over both thumbs.
  • The decoration should be clear in the details and has well composed colours.

 

Over all impression – 15 points

  • Harmony between hand and nails and also between length, form and chose of colours.
  • Complexity of the workmanship.
  • Hands and cuticle are well-manicured.

REALITY NAILS

Competition time: 45 minutes

The customer comes into the salon, it is the customers first visit. The customer wants nice nails and preferably with some decorations. Not sure really what it is…and you get free hands.

Do you recognize it? This is a normal day in the salon.

You will create three tips with three different designs for three different customers.

 

  • The competitors will at the start of the competition get three tips to be decorated. All decorations must be created on site.
  • The competitor needs no model for this competition and must sit at the tables alone.
  • At the start of the competition the competitors will get some pictures on three different customers, as in the text beside the picture will have slightly different wishes. It is to these three that is to be done tipping.
  • The tips must be applied to the paper for each customer and submitted to be judged. Put the tips firmly on the paper. The paper is left by the floor judge to the booth judges. It is the competitor’s task to arrange the tips firmly onto the paper.
  • Gel, acrylic, acrygel, dip system, gel polish, nail polish and acrylic paints may be used.
  • Any types of rhinestones, stripes, glitter and so on are allowed.
  • Decorations that are not made by hand like fimos, stickers, water decals or similar are NOT allowed. Everything must be assembled during the competition, no pre-made decorations.
  • The design must be a salon nail and can be done on a whole set, not a single nail in a set of nails. The judges are looking for nail art that can be made within the time of a set and which one can charge the customer for.
  • Electric file is allowed.

 

CRITERIA

Design – 30 points

  • Does the design match the customer and what she asked for?
  • Is it possible to make a complete set with this decoration within the time of a visit?

 

Decoration – 30 points

  • Creativity In the handling of design and techniques.
  • Originality In idea and design.

 

Composition – 30 points

  • Clarity of decoration and well composed colors.
  • Are the decorations handmade or predominantly stripes and glitter.

 

Techniques – 30 Points

  • Multiple technologies – it has used several techniques in the subject.

 

Professionalism – 30 points

  • Are the nails made in a professional way with surface, gloss, shape?
  • Are the decorations without scratches or bubbles?
  • Is it an appealing nail art?

Any points deductions

 

TEAM TRIO

Competition time: 60 minutes (1 hour)

Now the saloon is open. Three nail technicians will together create one hand with a French manicure with salon length on tips. The form and the length are the Teams choice, any form and length are accepted. Gel, acrylic or acrygel/polygel may be used.

 

  • One hand must be completed within the time of 60 minutes (1 hour)
  • The models hand may be manicured but must be free of any artificial product.
  • No white tips may be used (only natural or clear). The tips may not be pre-blended. All tips must be in a box with no less than 10 tis in each section of the box and with matching numbers. Optional tips may be used in natural or clear. Classic, Stiletto, Edge, yes, the shape is optional.
  • Smile line should be sculptured with a brush. A file may be used to refine the smile.
  • To create a sharp smile line, it is allowed to use Clear, Pink or Cover Pink.
  • If Cover Pink is used it is allowed to extend the nailbed. But if so – it should also be a crisp smile seen from the underside of the nail.
  • Electric file must NOT be used.
  • Topcoat may be used with all systems.
  • Oil may be used, also hand lotions but it must not be any residue on the nails or hands – then points will be a 2 point deduction for product residue.
  • The judges will also judge that the hands and cuticles are manicured.
  • The team can allocate their time, but if a contestant has completed their part, she/he will not go back. She/he shall bring her tray, which may not be used by the next participant.
  • Each contestant must, before the start of the competition, complete a tray where all the products needed for the contestant’s section can be found, but only those products/tools. However, both the tray and the workstation may be decorated or arranged in any innovative way. The tray and the workstation will be inspected before the competition starts and scored by the floor judges.
  • Each team gets to give the team a name and dress in team outfits that show a sense of togetherness and reflect the team’s name. Maybe something else that shows the team? Hairstyles? Makeup? This will be given points by the floor judges.
  • During the competition, the two who do not work on the model can eagerly cheer for their fellow contestants. Perhaps come up with happy cries, good advice or why not make an exciting war dance. However, all competitors shall remain close to their station throughout the competition. This will be given points by the floor judges.

 

The contestants shall work with the following schedule:

Participant 1:  Apply tips, file the length, shape and blend the tip.

On the Tray: Tips, tip cutter, resin, tools for prep, nail files – and other things that can be considered to belong to this part.

Participant 2:  Apply product for French manicure.

On the Tray: Primer or similar, gel or acrylic, brushes, pads, pinching tools, 1 file -and other things that can be considered to belong to this part.

Participant 3: Make the finishing file for shape, apex, c-curve and create high gloss.

On the Tray: Files, buffers, oil, hand crème, pads, topgloss – and other things that can be considered to belong to this moment.

 

CRITERIA

Length – 10 points

  • All nails should have the same length measured from the cuticle to the edge of the nail and be in harmony with the hand.
  • If any cover product has been used this should be in proportion with the natural nail.

 

Free edge shape and sidewalls – 10 points

  • The chosen form is optional but should be in harmony with the hand and must be with consistent in shape on all nails.
  • Sidewalls should be equal on the right and left side, seen from the top of the nail and from a side view.  The sideline can be shaped as a ballerina or stiletto or any other shape.

 

Apex and C-curve – 10 points

  • Apex – seen from the side – consistent and same placement on all nails and with the same height.
  • C-curve shall be with consistency in depth and the same on the left and right side. The highest point should be consistent in height and placement.

 

Cuticle area, Thickness of the Free edge and surface – 10 points

  • The product line should be invisible and the cuticles without damage. No flooding of the product or areas with product in the cuticle area.
  • The front of the nail – the thickness of the free edge – shall be thin and with an even upper and lower curve without any unevenness. May not be thicker than a credit card.
  • The whole surface should shine like glass and there must not be any scratches, marks or bubbles. No red marks on the nailbed.

 

Smile line and white tip – 10 points

  • The smile line shall be clearly and sharp sculptured. The smile should have consistency in shape on all nails.
  • The white tip should be consistent on all nail in the density of the color and without bubbles. The white tip should be consistent in length.

FLOOR JUDGE

Trays and Workstations – 10 points

  • Are the trays and the workstation set up and arranged in a uniform way? Classic, innovative or perhaps stylish.

 

Contestants total outfit – 10 points

  • Are all participants uniformly dressed? Is there a consistent theme in clothes, hair, makeup and maybe something else? Does it follow the team’s name?

 

Team spirit – 10 points

  • Do you feel a clear team spirit? Do you feel joy? Does the competitor get help and attention?

 

Overall impression – 10 points

  • The overall impression of the work of the team. Friendship and Glow.
  • Is the work done in a professional way? Does the station look good during all operations?

STILETTO

Theme: Arabian nights

Competition time: 120 minutes (2 hours)

Mystery and romance. Arabian nights can be anything from Scharzad telling tales to King Shahriâr in “Tales from the Arabian Nights” to oriental scents on a warm evening in Tunis. Or maybe we meet Aladdin, and we get our desires fulfilled.

 

  • The contestant may have manicured the model’s hands before the competition to immediately start the competition. There must be no artificial material in any form on the nails.
  • One hand (5 fingers) must be completed within the time of 120 minutes (2 hours).
  • The enhancements should be done by forms – no tips allowed.
  • The total length of each nail should be a minimum of 3 centimeters – there is no upper limit for the length.
  • Any gel, acrylic, acrygel, dip system, nail polish, gel polish, acrylic paint or airbrush are allowed.
  • Drills ARE allowed.
  • Any types of rhinestones, stripes, glitter and so on are allowed.
  • Decorations that are not made by hand like fimos, stickers, water decals or similar are NOT allowed. Everything must be assembled during the competition, no pre-made decorations.
  • The lower surface (the underside) of the nail may also be decorated and provides the opportunity for additional points.
  • Decorations may not extend more than 4 millimeters from the nail surface. Decorations may not extend more than 4 millimeters from the lower surface (the underside of the nail).
  • Oil may be used, also hand lotions but it must not be any residue on the nails or hands – then points will be a 2 point deduction for product residue.
  • Resin may be used.

 

CRITERIA

  • Degree of difficulty.

 

Decoration on the lower surface (underside) of the nail – 10 points

  • Creativity in the making and design of the decoration. Are the decorations handmade and well balanced?
  • Originality – is the design new and innovative.
  • Degree of difficulty.

 

Composition – 10 points

  • The composition should be in harmony and match over both all nails.
  • The decoration should be clear in the details and has well composed colours.

 

Professionalism – 10 points

  • No red marks due to overfilling or redness on the cuticle or hands.
  • The hands and cuticle should feel soft and have a healthy shine but without any excess products like oil or hand lotion.
  • The nails shall have a sharp and clean Stiletto form.

 

Over all impression – 30 points

  • Harmony between hand and nails and between length, form and chose of colours.
  • Complexity of the workmanship.
  • The theme should be clearly visible and understandable.

FANTASY

Theme: The Roaring 20s

Competition time: 60 minutes (1 hours)

Let´s step in among gangsters and mafia. At the dance palaces we dance Charleston and several listen to novelties such as the music style jazz. The clothing style becomes more casual with long pearl necklaces for ladies and a chick hat for the men. The shingle hairstyle is a hallmark that many dare to do. Now we take ourselves back to the Roaring 20s.

 

  • Fantasy – a full style – here is where all workmanship gives an arena.  A combination of Clothes, Hair, Make-up and Nails. Everything within beauty.
  • The competition time is 60 minutes (1 hour).
  • The model may be prepared with completed Clothes, Hair and Make-up before the competition starts.
  • The models hand may be manicured but must be free of any artificial product.
  • Drills ARE allowed.
  • All details that are to be used for the decoration of the nails may be prepared before the competition starts, but they may not be applied on the nails. Decorations may be applied on the nail tips.
  • Any types of rhinestones, stripes, glitter and so on are allowed, but NO decorations that are not made by hand like fimos, stickers, water decals or similar.
  • Any gel, acrylic, acrygel, dip system, nail polish, gel polish or acrylic paint are allowed.
  • They are no limit in how long or high the nails and decorations may be.
  • All kinds of nail oils and hand lotions may be used.
  • Contestants should write a paper with a head line for the theme and the idea how it follows the competition theme. It must also include the techniques and which systems that have been used. It shall say what details are handmade and how they are made. This paper will not be given points but be a help for the judges to see the theme. It must be written in English and may be made in advance.
  • When the competition time is over, models and contestants must get up. It is then given an extra 5 minutes so that the contestants can bring the models to the place where the judging is to take place and make the final changes on the spot. When this time is up, no more work may be done.

  • Creativity and originality in the making and design.
  • Details in the costume.

 

Hair – 30 points

  • The theme should be clearly visible and understandable.
  • Creativity and originality in the making and design.
  • Level of difficulty and details in the styling.

 

Make-up – 30 points

  • The theme should be clearly visible and understandable.
  • Creativity and originality in the making and design.
  • Is the make-up limited to the face or is it also visible on other part of the body?

 

Nails, details and colour – 30 points

  • The decoration should be clear in the details.
  • The number of details.
  • Well composed colours.

 

Nails, composition – 30 points

  • The theme should be clearly visible and understandable.
  • The composition should match from finger to finger with an overall view.
  • No excess products like oil or hand lotion.
  • Does the Nail Art on the nails tell a story?

 

Over all impression – 30 points

  • Harmony between hand and nails and also between length, form and chose of colours.
  • Complexity of the workmanship, and degree of difficulty.
  • The whole composition with Clothes, Hair, Make-up and Nails.
  • Has the overall design captured the interest and started a curiosity to want to see more and find some more details?
  • Are most parts handmade in all parts (clothes, hair, make-up, nails) or are there pre-purchased parts.

MIXED MEDIA

Theme: The Space

Now we get off for real. We will travel among moons, suns and maybe an occasional rocket. Surely this must be the biggest theme ever. Let’s go for it – “sky is the limit”.

 

  • In a Mixed Media competition everything is possible. You will have to supply a set of 10 nails and let your imagination flow to make a composition like a painter on a canvas. The tips should be assembled in such a way that the box could be transported without damage. It is the competitor’s responsibility that the box will be delivered in undamaged condition.
  • The shape of the display case may be maximum 30×30 centimeters (11,8 x 11,5 inch) and 10 centimeters (3,9 inch) high.
  • The background in the display case must be plain and without any decorations. Any color may be used.
  • It may not in any way reveal the competitions name in the display case.
  • No trademarks are allowed.
  • All sizes of tips are allowed. The composition may be of different sizes or all in the same size.
  • Pre-designed tips are not allowed.
  • The tips must be assembled in a way that it is possible to turn the box upside down without damaging the design. They must also be so attached that they can handle freight handling. Any damage during freight is the competitor’s responsibility.
  • Different techniques and products are allowed to create the design and more techniques gives a higher point. It may be used:
    • Rhinestones, glitter, foils.
    • Colored acrylic, gel, gel polish and nail polish
    • Airbrush and acrylic paint
    • Feathers, wire, thread…. It is all your choice.
    • All 3D decorations should be made by hand.
    • Decorations that are not made by hand like fimos, stickers, water decals or similar are not allowed.
  • The decoration may cover the nail partly or entirely and may extend by the most 4 centimeters (1,6 inch) in any direction.
  • More techniques used gives higher point.
  • Contestants should write a paper with a head line for the theme and the idea. It must also include the techniques and which systems that have been used. This paper will not be given points but be a help for the judges to see the theme. It must be written in English and may be made in advance.
  • Each competitor may participate with multiple boxes, but each box will incur a competition fee.
  • Boxes that have previously placed 1-2-3 may not participate.

 

The display case must be left to the competition staff by the latest:

To the CosmoNord trade show in Gothenburg latest Friday April 5th at 12.00 o’clock

The competition entries can be retrieved at the CosmoNord fair in Gothenburg from Saturday April 6th at 15.00 o´clock and no later than Saturday April 6that 18.00 o´clock. The competition entries are not returned by post.

 

CRITERIA

Decoration – 30 points

  • Creativity in the making and design of the decoration.
  • Originality – is the design new and innovative.

 

Composition and balance – 30 points

  • The composition should be in harmony and match over all the tips.
  • The decoration should be clear in the details and has well composed colours without any large spots without decoration.
  • The tips should not be fixed so there will be a single big Nail Art. You should clearly see all 10 tips – or parts of them.

 

Balance of colors – 30 points

  • Clarity of decoration and well composed colors.
  • Colors shall complement each other But at the same show contrasts.

 

Techniques – 30 points

  • Multiple techniques – has it been used several techniques in the subject.
  • Do you see a whole from nail to nail.
  • Decorations should preferably be created in multiple dimensions and not a flat nail art.

 

Overall impression – 30 points

  • Complexity of the workmanship, and degree of difficulty.
  • Harmony between the display case and nails and also between length, form and chose of colours.
  • Is the theme clearly visible and understandable?

Theme: Music

Do you want to be the one who creates next year’s signature image for Nordic Nail Open? Now is your chance.

The 2025 image for Nordic Nail Open should be inspired by music. What will we see? Disco queens, synths, rockabilly, jazz boys? We will publish the winner and the winning picture at the top of the Nordic Nail Open website and Facebook all the time until Nordic Nail Open 2025!

The competition entry must be emailed to reni@nailsystems.se  no later than Thursday March 21st 2024 at 12.00.

 

  • Each entry must consist of two images and a text document.
    • One image should be the competition entry, that is, a composition with at least 6 nails clearly visible – preferably more.
    • The second image should be for a technical assessment and show all 10 nails fully visible – no composition but only both hands against a flat surface so that the nails are clearly visible.
    • The text document should describe the idea of the theme of the image. It shall also indicate the techniques and systems used. This document will not be scored but will help the judges to see the theme. The document shall be written in English.
  • The image must not previously be published or used in any form on websites or social media.
  • The image must be in A4 format and sent in jpeg format and with at least 2MB for it to be a good clarity and resolution.
  • The image must be in colour.
  • The background and surroundings will also be assessed. The image should be an overall composition between nails and surroundings.
  • It must NOT be clear in the subject who has made the picture in any way through name or similar.
  • There must be no trademarks in the picture.
  • Multiple entries can be submitted by the same participant, but each picture will incur a competition fee.

 

CRITERIA

Nails – 30 points

  • Are the nails well made and in harmony in terms of shape, length and smoothness?
  • Are the nails with consistency. Are the nails the same length, or has the contestant chosen to make the nails in a greatly different length to create an effect. Anything is possible, as long as it is consistent.
  • Are there injuries or redness? What do the cuticles look like, do they look soft and nice or chapped?

 

Design and Techniques – 30 points

  • Do the nails and design look the same from nail to nail? Or if the design is chosen with different designs, do the nails harmonize in whole?
  • Multiple Techniques – has it been used several techniques in the subject.
  • Harmonizes the hands of the model with the image.

 

Theme – 30 points

  • Does the image match the theme? Can you see the idea of the theme clearly.
  • Has the whole image been well brought together as an idea; the styling, props, overall look and nail design? Does it work as a nail image?
  • Have all the elements of the image been considered and well executed with thought and consideration- ie. the hair, make-up, model choice, the nails etc.

 

Originality – 30 points

  • Is the image innovative? Is the picture original? Is there a new thought behind the picture and not something we have seen before.
  • Does the image have a ‘wow factor’ that draws you attention? Are your eyes drawn to the nails in the overall image?

 

Color and light – 30 points

  • Are the colors harmonious and are they well composed in the picture? Are the colors an effect and are they exciting, or harmonious, in the image.
  • Has it added depth, dimension, highlights & shadows to the frame to bring the story to life? Is the lighting appealing? Is it a clear illumination of what you want to bring out in the image or is it a “gray mist” over the entire image?

 

Composition – 30 points

  • Does the image focus on the nails? Do the nails appear well or are they too dominant?
  • Is the image finished professionally without too much postproduction work that makes it look contrived and unrealistic?
